Environment

Polarica recognizes the vital role of healthy ecosystems to our business sustainability. As such, we are committed to environmental responsibility and have implemented measures to reduce our impact on the environment.

We recognize the importance of reducing our carbon footprint and have invested in carbon calculations to accurately measure our greenhouse gas emissions. The data is now available for the past three years (2021–2023).

We aim to minimize our environmental impact through circular economy practices, waste management, optimized energy and water usage, reduced transportation, and strict adherence to environmental legislation.

Our environmental goals are outlined in an annual plan, approved by management, and reported to the board.

Material Efficiency

We remain committed to using materials responsibly and continually explore new ways to reduce waste and improve efficiency in our production processes.

Waste and energy optimization
Polarica is focused on reducing waste and energy consumption to minimize our environmental impact.

We are improving our recycling rate and have made significant progress toward zero waste by reducing paper, carton, and plastic usage and adopting more sustainable packaging.

Our LEAN and improvement-based production processes have increased efficiency and reduced energy consumption, while LED lighting and heat recovery have led to substantial energy savings.

To optimize transportation, we focus on maximizing fully loaded shipments and improving internal logistics. Such measures have resulted in reduced energy use.

By 2025, we aim to power 50% of our transportation in Sweden with biogas (LGB) trucks and install solar panels to meet 25% of our annual energy needs. This will not only reduce our carbon footprint but also help us become more self-sufficient and less reliant on traditional energy sources.

By streamlining processes and eliminating bottlenecks, we aim to cut overall consumption by 3–5% annually across materials, packaging, transportation, and logistics.

Carbon Neutrality

In our sustainability program, we have set emissions reduction targets through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Our targets for 2030 and 2035 are set and approved by SBTi.

Current carbon calculations

In 2023, we calculated our carbon emissions, leveraging the knowledge gained from previous years. Our calculations were carried out in accordance with the widely accepted Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting standard – the leading global standard for carbon accounting. We have also recalculated emissions for 2021. The results have been published in the 2023 Sustainability Report.

We made significant reductions in carbon emissions in 2023 T by ensuring that energy purchased in Poland, Kaskein Marja, and Polarica Marjahankinta (Finland) is nuclear-sourced. Meanwhile in Sweden, we rely on hydro, wind and solar power.

Our carbon footprint totaled 24 098 tons of CO2e. The majority of the carbon emissions emanate from Scope 3 activities, such as raw materials, packaging, transportation, and business travel. During 2023, we experienced a significant reduction in our Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by securing guarantees of origin for our energy sources.

Transparency and accountability in carbon accounting are vital for both environmental stewardship and our company’s long-term success.. Read more about the carbon calculations on our latest Sustainability Report.

Implementation of ISO 14001

From 2024 onwards, we will implement ISO 14001 in our Polish facilities to support our environmental sustainability goals. The project includes a full review of legal and standard requirements, assessment of environmental impacts, and identification of risks and opportunities.
